Riding Toward a Better Future with Songo and Computer Mania

At Computer Mania, we are committed to making a sustainable difference in our communities, not just financially but wholistically from education, upliftment, upskilling, training and so much more. We know that to make a difference that will have a long-lasting impact, we need to partner with existing community initiatives that have an established footprint in their communities. This is why we partnered with Songo.

The Songo.education programme, founded in 2017 with 50 children, started as a dream of providing a safe space for children to play on bikes. When the Khayamandi School, originally built for 1800 students, quickly grew to over 4000 learners with no additional resources, Songo knew they had to
step in for their community. Now in 2025, the Educational and Sports programme have more than 130 children between the ages of 3-24 years old.

Computer Mania’s commitment to making a sustainable difference at the forefront of all our corporate social investment initiatives, our collaboration with Songo was imminent. This is why on Friday, 28 February 2025,  Computer Mania donated 120 Virgo 15.6”Notebook Back Packs to assist them in making their commute with learning material or sport equipment. Each child also received a goodie bag, filled with snacks and sweet treats for them to enjoy.

Underpinning Computer Manias’ involvement in this initiative is the core belief that access to sports and educational programmes gives
learners the best chance of success as they go through their schooling years and beyond.

Sport

The Cycling programme is the foundation of Songo. The camaraderie, freedom and joy that a bike represents is a huge attraction for the children. Through sports children develop important life skills, such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance. The physical and mental health benefits of structured play are also key drivers of the programme.

Education

songo.info's Education programme has a classroom so children can complete their homework with the help of a full-time teacher and 6 international students from Stellenbosch University.

Life Skills

Not everything worth knowing can be taught at school. We focus on life skills to help our children become well-rounded individuals with the ability to make a better life for themselves beyond school.

How We Help

Adverse Childhood Events or ACEs consist of experiences such as physical and emotional abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness, and household violence. Studies have indicated that children, such as our beneficiaries, in under-resourced communities experience at least five ACEs a year.

ACEs result in three times higher school repetition rates and far higher dropout rates when compared to well resourced communities. This, in turn, results in high levels of frustration and lower levels of education in these under-resourced communities, ultimately resulting in higher levels of crime and dependency on the state.

Who We Are

Pedal Project is a youth development program based in Somerset West that uses cycling to engage at-risk youth. Through sport, we create meaningful connections and provide essential support to help young people build resilience and thrive.

How We Help

We use cycling as a therapeutic tool, harnessing the healing properties of movement and mindfulness to support mental well-being. Our program is facilitated by community-based mentors who guide youth through structured sessions that incorporate a mindfulness curriculum. This approach helps young people develop self-regulation skills, emotional resilience, and a sense of empowerment.

Why It Matters

South African youth face ongoing trauma, yet the country has a critical mental health support gap 90% of those in need do not receive care. With limited resources available, Pedal Project provides a community-driven solution, offering accessible, impactful support where it’s needed most.
